Our STORY

As a kid growing up in Buffalo, NY in the 1980s, I got a first-hand look at the massive shift in the lives of American workers. My dad, a highly skilled and dedicated worker, saw his career take him (and our family’s financial security) from one plant closure and job change to another. The list of companies he worked for, and which closed operations in Buffalo during his tenure, is remarkable: Conrail, Nabisco, Trico, Russer Foods, even the mighty Bethlehem Steel.

Today, it is easy to see that my family’s experience was just the beginning of the change in the landscape of the American workforce.  My career with a software company focused on workforce development made me realize just how much the seismic shifts of the technology revolution and globalization of jobs had widened the “skills gap”.  This meant many workers (many like my dad) had not only lost their jobs, but also the well-defined paths to obtaining the skills needed for career advancement. The norm of career-long relationships with a single employer that provided clear guardrails and development has also rapidly diminished, leaving the average worker to forge their own path.

So how can we help the American worker to chart their own journey?  We believe that right technology can be a catalyst, regardless of a worker’s background or technical expertise. Providing the right data and support will help anyone using our tools to climb career, economic, and social ladders on their own terms. And maybe, if we get it right, to address some of the power imbalance between American employers and American workers.

This was the inspiration for Skillspace – an easy to use, accessible tool that helps everyone understand their strengths and create the shortest path towards a rewarding career in today’s workforce. Skillspace is simple to use, available to all, and focused a user’s unique story.
